Integration of Repeater Operations and Undersea Fiber Optic Cable Manufacturing Enables Rapid, Cost-Effective Delivery of Technology Solutions to CustomersNEWINGTON, NH - January 13, 2005 --
Tyco Telecommunications, a leading supplier of undersea fiber optic networks and marine services, announced today the strengthening of its Newington, NH manufacturing operations with the integration of its undersea repeater production capabilities into the existing Tyco Integrated Cable Systems (TICS) manufacturing facility. Centralizing production engineering and manufacturing operations for submerged equipment in one locale makes Tyco Telecommunications uniquely capable of achieving the operational efficiencies associated with a single fully-integrated facility.
The TICS facility is fully qualified for manufacture of the entire submerged equipment portion of Tyco Telecommunications’ undersea systems, including cable, repeaters, branching units and gain equalization units. As system implementation intervals continue to shrink to an average of 12-14 months, efficient, integrated manufacturing operations are critical to minimizing transit times and ensuring timely overall system delivery.
“Despite the current period of rationalization in the undersea telecom industry, Tyco Telecommunications continues to make strategic investments in our business to strengthen our position as a technological innovator and market-leading undersea system supplier,” said Ron Armstrong, vice president of operations, Tyco Telecommunications. “By enhancing the efficiency of our design and production environment, we are able to rapidly and cost-effectively deliver the highest quality new products and technologies to meet our customers’ evolving needs.”
Tyco Telecommunications continues to maintain its strategic relationship with Hitachi Cable Ltd for the supply of cable from the Asia Pacific region. When coupled with the supply of underwater electronics from TICS, Tyco Telecommunications is positioned with manufacturing diversity and supply flexibility that is unmatched in the industry.
Since producing one of the first undersea telegraph cables in 1898, Tyco Telecommunications has manufactured more than 350,000 km of undersea cable. In more than a century of innovation, this Tyco facility has attained numerous firsts, including manufacture of the American portions for both the first trans-Atlantic telephone cable and the first transoceanic fiber optic cable system (TAT-8). TICS has also manufactured fiber optic cable for the first undersea optically amplified system (Americas-1), Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology, and, most recently, the first transoceanic eight (8) fiber pair fiber optic cable (Tyco Global Network (TGN) Trans-Pacific network).
Tyco Telecommunications, a business unit of Tyco Electronics, is the industry pioneer in undersea communications technology and marine services. Drawing on its heritage of technical innovation and industry recognized performance, the company delivers the most reliable, high-quality solutions to organizations with undersea communications needs vital to their core mission. Based in Morristown, NJ, Tyco Telecommunications is dedicated to providing organizations around the world with total solutions and support for undersea optical systems.
