Undersea Fiber Optic Network Directly Connects Karachi, Pakistan to Fujairah, United Arab EmiratesMORRISTOWN, NJ - July 29, 2005 --
Tyco Telecommunications, a leading supplier of undersea fiber optic networks and marine services, announced today the beginning of construction as part of a multi-million dollar turnkey contract with Transworld Associates (Pvt.), Ltd. (TWA), a joint venture between Orascom Telecom of Egypt and Saif Group of Pakistan, for the TWA-1 undersea fiber optic cable network. With direct cable landings in Karachi, Pakistan and Fujairah, in the United Arab Emirates (under a landing party agreement with Emirates Telecommunication Corporation ‘Etisalat’), the TWA-1 Network is being developed by TWA under license from the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority.
Under the terms of the contract, Tyco Telecommunications will supply the network including network design, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and testing. Construction is underway on the high-capacity, next generation Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) undersea fiber optic cable system, which is more than 1,200 km in length and capable of carrying up to 1.28 Tb/s of transmission capacity when fully upgraded. Planned for initial service in the second half of 2005, the TWA-1 Network is designed to satisfy the increasing demands for voice, data and Internet bandwidth and the accelerating use of broadband services in Pakistan and the Gulf region.
