Tyco Telecommunications supports Telefonica International Wholesale Services as it doubles the Capacity of its South American Submarine Cable Ring (“Sam-1”) for the second timeMORRISTOWN, NJ - March 13, 2006 --
Telefonica International Wholesale Services and Tyco Telecommunications have signed a contract for a network upgrade of Telefonica’s undersea fibre optic ring network that connects Central, North, and South America. The network, which Tyco Telecommunications constructed for Telefonica in 2001, is comprised of twelve landing stations connecting the United States, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Brazil, and Argentina on the East Coast of South America, and Chile, Peru, and Guatemala along the West Coast of South America.
This is the second time Telefonica is upgrading this System. The main objective of this second upgrade will be to increase capacity between the system’s major traffic points, while eliminating the need for signal regeneration at the intermediate stations. To create these “express routes” and still maintain the network’s maximum design capacity, the upgrade will employ Tyco Telecommunications’ G3 SLTE technology in addition to a redeployment of existing network equipment. Upon completion, the upgrade will provide 80 Gb/s of new capacity for IP services that together with the existing capacity will provide a total of 160 Gb /s connectivity. Even with this upgrade, the network will be operating well below its maximum design capacity of 1.92Tb/s, providing additional upgrade capability to support future sales growth.
Jose Ramón Vela, CEO of Telefonica Wholesale said, “It has been a little bit more than a year from completion of the previous upgrade, which demonstrates the fast pace at which capacity demand is increasing in the area. The upgrade of the System is a direct result of the continued growth of the telecommunications market in Latin America and Telefonica’s position as a leader in the marketplace. We chose Tyco Telecommunications for this important upgrade because of their intimate knowledge of the system and their strong technological leadership.”
“We are pleased to yet again be working with Telefonica,” states Ignacio Ugalde, CEO of Tyco Marine, the Spanish subsidiary of Tyco Telecommunications. “The fact that the Sam-1 Network requires additional capacity so soon after its previous upgrade demonstrates how quickly this market is growing and how well Telefonica is meeting the needs of the South American customers.
The unique design of this upgrade to create long express routes for optimizing Telefonica’s service needs without sacrificing the design capacity demonstrates Tyco’s ability to work creative solutions for its customers by providing the most advanced technologies available in the industry.”
