Tyco Telecommunications to Lay 145 km of Submarine Fiber Optic Cable to Facilitate Communication throughout the Canary Islands Archipelago

MORRISTOWN, NJ - January 3, 2007 --

Tyco Telecommunications, a business unit of Tyco Electronics and an industry pioneer in undersea communications technology and marine services, has strengthened its existing relationship with Telefonica de España, winning a contract to install 145 km of cable between the Canary Islands of La Gomera and El Hierro. Telefonica de España S.A.U. will support the growth of voice and information telecom traffic between the islands and extend the broadband services to the entire insular territory.
The new system will facilitate high quality transmission and reliability, extending new service offerings to enhance the communications capabilities for the citizens of the islands. The subsea system will incorporate El Hierro as a national node into the existing network, and reinforce the role of La Gomera as an inter-island node. The commissioning of this project showcases Telefonica’s commitment to the Canary Islands as a natural bridge of intercontinental communications between Europe, Africa and America.
The El Hierro and La Gomera terminal stations will be comprised of four fibers, approximately 130m of cable, with installation performed by Tyco Telecommunications’ Reliance Class cable ship, Teneo. The system, utilizing DWDM, the most advanced transmission technology, will be initially equipped to support a 10Gbit/s wavelength, allowing the equivalent voice traffic of 245,760 simultaneous telephone conversations. The technology will enable the system to reach a maximum design capacity equivalent to 2,949,120 simultaneous basic telephone circuits.
La Gomera inhabitants will have access to the technology that enables real-time communications, allowing worldwide connectivity. The collaboration of diverse governmental authorities from the regional and local entities in the Canary Islands was essential to the completion of the project.
